Upper Abdominal (tummy/belly) ultrasound is a non-invasive medical imaging to check the organs and structures inside your belly. This includes your liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bile duct, spleen, kidneys, and aorta.

1. Why would I need an ultrasound of my upper abdomen?
Abdominal ultrasounds are used to identify the source of abdominal pain, nausea & vomiting, jaundice, abnormal liver or kidney function tests, anaemia, and bloating. Abdominal ultrasounds can be used to test for a variety of conditions, such as:
– Cancer or other serious illnesses in the main solid organs such as liver, kidneys, spleen, or pancreas.
– Gallstones and gallbladder polyp,bile duct stones and kidney stones.
– Tumours, cysts, fluid.
– Suspected liver disease such as fatty liver, liver cirrhosis. Furthermore, enlarged liver and spleen (Hepatomegaly and Splenomegaly).
– Liver and pancreas assessment in patients with Diabetes.
– Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm if you are at risk for an aortic (abdominal) aortic aneurysm, such as family history of Aortic Aneurysm.

2. What preparation do I need for upper abdominal scan?
You are required to have at least 06 hours fasting for obtaining an adequate result until your scan has been completed. Small amount of plain water only can be considered in case you are thirsty. However, if you are diabetic or taking any special medication, please contact us before booking the appointment

3. What kind of clothing do I need to wear for this scan?
There is no specific requirement of clothing for undergoing this scan. However, wearing loose and two-piece cloths are advisable.

4. What happens if I have eaten before the appointment?
Your scan will still be attempted, however may interfere with the results of the test.

5. What happens during the upper abdominal scan.
You will be asked to lie down on the scan couch(bed) comfortably. Our well qualified experienced specialist ultrasound Practitioner/Sonographer or Consultant Radiologist will put water-based gel on your upper tummy. Thereafter, they examine all included organs by placing the transducer (camera) over the gel on your upper belly.

6. Is there any risk involved?
No, there is no known risk of having this examination. However, certain factors or conditions may interfere with the results of the test. These include high BMI and bowel gas.

7. Can I bring our relative or friend?
Yes, you can bring up to two companions. However, the number might vary for 4D/5D baby scans.

8. Will it be painful?
The ultrasound itself doesn’t cause any pain and you won’t feel anything other than the sensor being applied to your skin. Ultrasounds are often used to try and identify the cause of a patient’s severe pain in the upper abdominal region.In these cases, some pressure is applied to the surface of the patient’s skin over an affected organ, such as an inflamed gallbladder. This may temporarily increase the pain coming from the affected organ, but would not be more uncomfortable than, say, a doctor performing a clinical examination on a ward/in the clinic.

9. What is the duration of the scan?
The duration of the scan is usually 10 – 15 minutes and sometimes can take up to 20 minutes depends on the visibility of organs and complexity of scan.

10. Is there any side effect of this scan?
No, you can go home after the scan and go back to work as needed. After the scan you can eat and drink as normal.

11. What happens after the scan?
You will be given a provisional verbal report of your result. You can resume eating, drinking and other routine activities normally. Thereafter, the radiologist/sonographer will review the images and draw up a report of the results. The encrypted final digital report along with images will be sent to your registered email address safely. However, we also can send the same to your registered GP or other healthcare professional if you want.

12. What would happen if any abnormality will be identified?
If any abnormality or pathology is revealed during the scan, our performing radiologist or sonographer would advise you whether you require any follow up, further imaging, referring to your GP or concern healthcare professional for further assessment and management.

13. When will I get my result?
You will get your scan result within 24h-48hr. Generally, after the completion of your scan, the radiologist/sonographer will review the images and draw up a report of the results. The encrypted final digital report along with images will be sent to your registered email address safely. However, we also can send a copy of your result to your registered GP or other healthcare professional if you want.

14. Do I need a referral from my GP or other health professional to book this scan?
No. You don’t require any referral for booking and undergoing any kind of private ultrasound scan as the self-referral is considered.

15. Can ultrasound scan detect cancer?
The ultrasound scan can identify those masses/lumps in any included organs which can be suspected as a cancer mass/lump. However, in this situation we shall have to refer you for further imaging/investigation such as CT scan or MRI scan. This procedure can also involve certain type of blood tests as well as biopsy to confirm the cancerous nature of the mass/lump.
