Urinary tract scan also known as Kidney, Ureter, and bladder (KUB) scan is a non-invasive medical imaging to check:

• Cancer or other serious illnesses in both kidneys, visualized upper and lower ureter (The tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder)and bladder.
• Stones in both kidneys, visualized upper and lower ureter (The tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder) and bladder.
• Tumours, cysts etc.
• Suspected chronic kidney disease (CKD).
• Transplanted kidney.

1. Why would I need an ultrasound of my urinary tract scan?
-If you are experiencing back or lower back pain with- or without radiating to the groin or testicle (in male), loin pain with- or without radiating to the groin or testicle (in male), uneasiness or burning in passing urine and blood in urine or if you are feeling Urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms which may include frequently passing urine or pain or burning on passing urine and deteriorating urinary incontinence or if you are pregnant and suffering from back/ lower back or loin pain and or if you have been suffering from weak bladder.

2. What preparation do I need for an upper abdominal scan?
You must have full bladder to get the best result. Therefore, drink two pints of water at least an hour before your scan appointment.

3. What kind of clothing do I need to wear for this scan?
There is no specific requirement of clothing for undergoing this scan. However, wearing loose and two-piece cloths are advisable.

4. What happens if I forgot to drink water or don’t have the required full bladder at the time of scanning?
Your scan will still be attempted, however may interfere with the results of the test.

5. What happens during the Urinary Tract/Kidney, Ureter, Bladder scan.
You will be asked to lie down on the scan couch (bed) comfortably. Our well qualified, experienced specialist ultrasound Practitioner/Sonographer or Consultant Radiologist will put water-based gel on your lower and both sides of tummy and/or both sides of the back. Thereafter, they examine all included organs by placing the transducer (camera) over the gel on all relevant areas.

6. Is there any risk involved?
No, there is no known risk of having this examination. However, certain factors or conditions may interfere with the results of the test. These include high BMI and bowel gas.

7. Can I bring our relative or friend?
Yes, you can bring up to two companions. However, the number might vary for 4D/5D baby scans.

8. Will it be painful?
The ultrasound itself doesn’t cause any pain, and you won’t feel anything other than the sensor being applied to your skin. Ultrasounds are often used to try and identify the cause of a patient’s severe pain in the lower abdominal region. In these cases, some pressure is applied to the surface of the patient’s skin over an affected organ, such as an inflamed or over-distended bladder or inflammation in prostate or seminal vesicles. This may temporarily increase the pain coming from the affected organ, but would not be more uncomfortable than, say, a doctor performing a clinical examination on a ward/in the clinic.

9. What is the duration of the scan?
The duration of the scan is usually 10 – 15 minutes and sometimes can take up to 20 minutes depends on the visibility of organs and complexity of scan.

10. Is there any side effect of this scan?
No, you can go home after the scan and go back to work as needed. After the scan, you can eat and drink as normal.

11. What happens after the scan?
You will be given a provisional verbal report of your result. You can empty your bladder and resume other routine activities normally. Thereafter, the radiologist/sonographer will review the images and draw up a report of the results. The encrypted final digital report along with images will be sent to your registered email address safely. However, we also can send the same to your registered GP or other healthcare professional if you want.

12. What would happen if any abnormality will be identified?
If any abnormality or pathology is revealed during the scan, our performing radiologist or sonographer would advise you whether you require any follow up, further imaging, referring to your GP or concern healthcare professional for further assessment and management.

13. When will I get my result?
You will get your scan result within 24h-48hr. Generally, after the completion of your scan, the radiologist/sonographer will review the images and draw up a report of the results. Thereafter they will send you an encrypted final digital report along with images to your registered email address safely. However, we also can send a copy of your result to your registered GP or other healthcare professional if you want.

14. Do I need a referral from my GP or other health professional to book this scan?
No. You don’t require any referral for booking and undergoing any kind of private ultrasound scan, as the self-referral is considered.

15. Can ultrasound scan detect cancer?
The ultrasound scan can identify those masses/lumps in any included organs which can be suspected as a cancer mass/lump. However, in this situation we shall have to refer you for further imaging/investigation such as CT scan or MRI scan. This procedure can also involve certain type of blood tests as well as biopsy to confirm the cancerous nature of the mass/lump.
